Notre Dame recruit Matt James dies after falling from a hotel balcony

Matt James, an offensive lineman at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, died Friday after falling off a third-floor hotel balcony while on a spring break trip in Panama City, Florida.

James together with his fellow recruit Luke Massa was said to be just having a vacation at the time the accident happened. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound offensive lineman signed to play for Notre Dame in February.

According to police reports, Matt James died almost instantly after falling off the balcony at about 6:25 p.m. at the Days Inn on Front Beach Road.
